Personal Coaching

Personal coaching is about growing in the right direction by taking action for specific results.  Personal coaching is about declaring yourself ready and enough and actually bringing it into real life.  Personal coaching seeks to identify new personal and professional goals and to develop the skills to achieve them.

Successful sports people have been using coaches for a long time – and taking advantage of a personal coach works in much the same way.  A coach is a source of support to further develop, build strategy and plan concrete action.  As a rapid and measurable means to fulfill your potential – a coach is often the difference between achievement and disappointment.

In one-on-one sessions, a personal coach enables you to reach new levels of competence, confidence and self belief. With weekly input, you develop the habit to not only clarify and pursue worthwhile goals but actually achieve them, creating success and fulfillment in all areas of life.  Seriously – it is a methodical system and by following it we can turn things around in single sessions.

Coaching Tools and Techniques

Coaching is built on a foundation of tools, skills and strategies that bring rapid life changing results.  It is really powerful to see the total transformation from a client in the course of a single conversation.  The metaphor of ‘life coaching’ reflects the modern day coach assisting a client to go from A to B with comfort and speed and clarity.

Life or personal coaching is similar to solution-based counselling and is characterized by:

  • Tending to be a brief intervention – the best life coaching relationships are for a fixed time period with specific goals in pace after the first session.
  • Focusing on the generation of a future via change through action
  • Assisting clients to discover/clarify their goals and their relevant resources
  • Supporting clients to discover what they are doing that they want to do differently
  • Assisting clients to discover what they are already doing that is useful
  • Assisting clients to discover what they could be doing more of that would assist the goals of the process and their personal agenda.
  • As such, the process aims to be brief, practical, empowering, generative and action-based.

The ‘coaching conversation’ is highly specialised and aims to provide clients with a springboard into a journey they are seeking. With a constant focus on the client’s goals, the coaching intervention does not have a designated number of sessions or time frame. It is a process of self discovery led by a listening skills based coach who puts carefully timed questions to the coachee.  It will end when the client feels able to complete their journey without the support and skills of coach.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is a psychological intervention that uses acceptance and mindfulness strategies, together with commitment and behaviour change strategies, to increase psychological flexibility.  This means you take specific steps in response to your thoughts and they result in different outcomes.

ACT (pronounced ‘act’ not ‘ay see tee’) is developed within a real-world based philosophy called functional contextualism and is based on Relational Frame Theory (RFT), a comprehensive theory of language and cognition that has emerged within behaviour analysis.

ACT differs from traditional Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) in that it focuses on what they can control – their arms, legs and mouth – rather than trying to teach people to better control their thoughts, feelings, sensations, memories and other private events.  In this way it is simple and accessible and results are noticeable relatively rapidly.

As such, ACT teaches you to ‘just notice’, accept and embrace your private events, especially previously unwanted ones. This helps the client to get in contact with a transcendent sense of self known as ‘self-as-context’ – the person who is always there observing and experiencing, yet distinct from one’s thoughts, feelings, sensations, and memories. ACT aims to help the individual to clarify their personal values and to take action on them, bringing more vitality and meaning to their life in the process.

The core conception of ACT is that psychological suffering is usually caused by experiential avoidance, cognitive entanglement and resulting psychological rigidity that leads to a failure to take needed behavioural steps that are consistent with core values.

While ACT is still relatively new in the development of its research base, it has shown preliminary research evidence of effectiveness for a variety of problems including chronic pain, addictions, smoking cessation, depression, anxiety, psychosis, workplace stress and diabetes management.

ACT has also been adapted to create a non-therapy version of the same processes called Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. This process, oriented towards the development of mindfulness and acceptance, has been investigated in several research studies, with good preliminary results. It values skills in non-clinical settings such as businesses or schools.

Managing Stress

Research shows that relaxation and meditation lead to an overall reduction in stress levels, improve memory and concentration, decrease feelings of worry and anxiety and support an overall feeling of wellbeing and happiness.

Many relaxation and medication practices are based on deep breathing, which is a simple yet powerful relaxation technique. It’s easy to learn, can be practiced in almost any time or place, and can be combined with other relaxation strategies such as music or aromatherapy.

Breath training

The breath immediately and directly links the body and the mind in a bi-directional manner, which means that thoughts and behaviours influence the manner of breathing and that the way we breathe can change our physiology and our mood.

The breath is a conscious entry point to personal change. In meditation it is one of the most basic and useful objects of focus because it is totally portable and ever present. By focusing on the breath, we can still our minds and our bodies simultaneously. It connects us to the present moment and to the present moment of every other living being in our universe. Just reflecting on this for a few minutes can settle a restless mind.

Personal Coaching Services

Apart from breathing meditation, we often include breath training in our counselling sessions when someone is seeking help for anxiety, stress or panic. Breath training can be a simple instruction with visualisation, or might involve the use of an expandable chest strap that feeds the breathing signal into a computer for the benefit of being able to see the rise and fall of the breath, and the changes that occur in the heart rate as the breathing is regulated and extended.

This kind of biofeedback training has a powerful effect on people as they learn how their breathing affects the heart rate and blood pressure. In fact, when the EEG is also connected, an amazing synchrony of the Theta waves appears after a very short time. Under this condition, relaxation deepens dramatically. Heart rate and heart arrhythmia can benefit from training on our Heart Math biofeedback equipment or our more sophisticated CardioPro RSA biofeedback program. Many good research publications demonstrate the usefulness of bio-feedback to different kinds of stress-related health problems, including heart health.

Other kinds of biofeedback include an infrared pulse monitor worn on a finger for blood pressure management, or over the forehead secured by a headband to help train blood flow to the frontal lobes. This assists concentration, relaxation and is used for non migraine type headache control. A temperature feedback monitor can be held in the hand and concentration with visualisation can produce a rise in hand temperature. This has been shown to reduce the incidence of some types of migraine.

Some systems known to benefit from relaxation training include immune, hormonal, nervous, cardiovascular, bronchial, as well as all aspects of physical, mental and emotional health. It is also important for academic and professional success, athletic performance and good relationships.

Meditation

Meditation is the natural process of withdrawing attention from externals, including from physical and mental processes, and consciously directing it inward to a chosen focus of concentration. The beneficial side-benefits of regular meditation practice have been widely reported in a variety of excellent books and magazines.

These benefits can include stress reduction, strengthening of the body’s immune system, better organised thought processes, improved powers of concentration, enhanced powers of memory, refinement and enlivening of the nervous system, awakening of regenerative energies, slowing of biologic aging processes, and orderly functioning of the body’s organs, glands, and systems.

For these reasons, regular meditation practice is now increasingly recommended by many physicians and representatives of health research centres as a pleasant way for patient-clients to be more responsible for their own total well-being. We recommend learning from a trained teacher – we often hear that many ‘cushion sitting hours’ have been wasted due to improper technique.

The most important thing is to start in the first place and to practice well for five minutes twice a day at regular times. This is far more beneficial than longer stretches at irregular intervals, often practiced with impatience. The habit of practice sets you up for eventual success. A short, regular session eventually becomes a longer regular session because it is immensely satisfying and rewarding. Inconsistent practice can begin to be associated with boredom and frustration, leading to aversion to practice.
