Fishing Boat Styles, Hulls and Designs
Reef and Inshore Fishing Boats – These vessels are perfect for saltwater bay and reef angling within sight of land and in water less than 30 metres deep. Generally between 16- 24ft in length, these boats are powered by an outboard petrol engine.
These boats are small enough to navigate through shallow flats and inlets. Inshore boats are typically small enough to be trailerable and on average cost from $20,000 – 80,000 .
Sport Fishing Boats – Like to catch huge fish in openwater? Then you will need a boat that is capable of handling the sea conditions that come with that territory. Also called deep sea or blue water fishing which happens in waters 30 metres deep or more and at some distance from land.
Offshore saltwater vessels vary from basic layouts to luxury salons, sleeping quarters and entertaining. Generally fitted with inboard diesel engines that can accommodate long range fishing and trawling lines. Compared to reef or bay fishing it can be more dangerous and thorough knowledge is required to be informed about weather patterns, navigation and marine safety.
Offshore boats generally need to be moored in a marina. They are constructed so they can withstand the weather and water conditions encountered at sea. Also, they can differ in design and prices vary widely and can be expensive to build and maintain.
Freshwater Fishing Boats - If you fish in lakes rather than in seas then a freshwater fishing boat is great for the family and those who tend to get a little sea sick. In this category there are many options, including runabouts, bowriders and half cabins. They can be made from aluminium or fibreglass. Designed to have a broader use and can generally be used for watersports actives.
Bream, Bass and Barra Boats - These sleek, colourful and speedy tournament style boats are equipped with bow and stern casting decks with the hull sitting low in the water.
A tournament boat is a small boat that is designed and equipped primarily for bass, barra and bream fishing. Mainly used in freshwater lakes, rivers and streams but will encounter some saltwater when estuary fishing. The modern tournament boat will feature swivel chairs, under floor storage lockers and a re-circulating live-well for bait and fish.
Typically constructed of either aluminum or fiberglass, aluminum boats tend to be lighter and slightly smaller in size and cost less than there fiberglass counterpart. The fiberglass builds tend to offer more space, sturdier handling, and the ability to mount larger outboard motors.
