Horrific Jet Ski Crash
Four fishermen had to be sedated in hospital following a gruesome jet ski accident which struck their boat yesterday morning, killing one man and seriously injuring another.

Coast guard duty skipper Wim Thierry described the scene as "horrific".

"Those blokes witnessed an awful scene. After they were hit, they turned the boat around and found the two guys floating. It was very messy," he said.

"Luckily one of the guys on the boat was a trained marine radio operator and was able to call for help immediately, which possibly saved the other guy\\'s (Scott Stretton) life."

Stretton, of Chermside, was transported by ambulance to Redcliffe Hospital and later airlifted to the Royal Brisbane, where he was reportedly in a critical condition in intensive care yesterday afternoon.

It is understood that the four men aboard the fishing boat were all in such a state of shock that they were taken to Redcliffe Hospital and placed under sedation.

Police told reporters yesterday that the driver of the jet ski, Keith Whalley, may have been drunk at the time of the accident.

Inspector Mark Jones said there were "indications" there was alcohol involved and that Whalley and Stretton had been at a party together earlier.

"There were three males who presented themselves to police shortly afterwards looking for their mates and indicated that there was some liquor taken," he said.

He said there was no alcohol involved with the men on the boat.

It is understood the jet ski did not have any lights and was black, making it impossible for the fishing boat to see in the dark.

The jet ski and the boat have both been seized by police and taken as evidence. Forensic police and water police are investigating.
