Jessica Watson will take the long way home as she nears the finish of here round-the-world solo voyage to avoid the treacherous Bass Strait.
Jessica is in high spirits - thanks to flyovers by her family over the weekend. Today she is back focussing on completing the final weeks of her sailing odyssey.
It is believed she will be navagating the safer passage around Tasmania's southern tip instead of cutting across the Great Australian Bight between southern Australia and the top of the Apple Isle in the coming weeks.
The longer route will minimise Jessica's time spent in Bass Strait, a stretch of water infamous for huge swell and potentially boat breaking conditions.
The Strait claimed six experienced sailors during a violent storm in the 1998 Sydney to Hobart yacht race.
